Kinnow mandarin is a hybrid resulting from a cross between King Mandarin and Willow leaf (Mediterranean common) mandarin made in 1915 by Frost in California and released in 1935. Feutrell (the correct spelling is Fewtrell) is an old variety from New South Wales in Australia. It may be a natural tangor (mandarin x sweet orange), with Willow leaf as the mandarin parent. It is an early variety (Fewtrell’s early), while Kinnow is mid-season in maturity. Both Feutrell and Kinnow mandarins have a fairly strong tendency to alternate and they have numerous seeds. Citrus fruit are native to Southeast Asia and are cultivated in warm climate. The Kinnow,
a member of the citrus fruits family, was developed through a lengthy hyberdization process. The Kinnow is indigenous to Pakistan, the largest grower of Kinnow in the world. Today, Pakistan stands among the top ten citrus growing countries in the world. The major citrus varieties grown in the Punjab are mandarins, with the two varieties Kinnow and Feutrell representing 80 percent of all citrus. Easy Peeler: Kinnow is recognized as “easy peeler” due to its distinctiveness. It is rich source of vitamin C and other minerals. The rind containing numerous oil glands comes off easily with bare hands. Therefore, the Kinnow can be just peeled off and enjoyed anywhere, anytime. The soil and climatic condition in Pakistan have given it unique an aromatic flavor which distinguished it from other comparable cultivators grown in the world. Due to these remarkable qualities Pakistani Kinnow got prominent position in international market. Its export is increasing day by day due to quality, heavy crop and restless efforts of big market players. According to research of (PHDEB) Pakistan Horticulture Development & Export Board, Pakistan has exported Two hundred thousand (200000) tons of Kinnow in the year 2005-2006. Kinnow season starts in month of December and goes up to month of March.
